How to get your brand mentioned by ChatGPT and other AI assistants

Updated 14 October 2026

People now ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude which product to buy. If your brand isn't in the answer, you're not on the shortlist. Here's how those answers are put together, and what you can actually do about it.

01

How AI assistants decide what to say

When an assistant searches the web to answer a question, it reads a handful of pages and summarises them. The brands named on those pages are the brands that end up in the answer.

So the question isn't really "how do I get into ChatGPT". It's "which pages does it read for questions in my category, and am I on them?"

02

Step 1: find out where you stand

Write down five to ten questions your customers would actually type, without your brand name in them. "Best accounting app for small shops in India", not "is Acme good".

Ask them in two or three assistants and note two things: whether you're mentioned, and which sites are cited as sources. Those sources are your target list.

You can do this by hand, or run one question through our free check, which shows the sources too.

03

Step 2: get onto the sources it already trusts

One article on a site the assistant already cites is worth more than ten on sites it ignores. That's the core of it.

  • Pitch the publications that keep appearing as sources, or buy a clearly labelled sponsored feature on them.
  • Lists and comparisons ("best X for Y") are cited often. Being included in a well-read one helps.
  • Make sure the piece names you plainly and says what you do in one sentence.

04

Step 3: say the same facts everywhere

Assistants repeat what they can confirm in more than one place. If your site says you serve "SMBs", a press piece says "enterprises" and your LinkedIn says "startups", the model has nothing solid to repeat.

Pick a short description, three or four facts you can back up (customers, founding year, numbers) and use them consistently.

05

Step 4: make your own site easy to cite

  • A plain "what we do" paragraph near the top of your home page.
  • A pricing page and an about page with real facts, not just slogans.
  • Pages that aren't blocked from search engines, and load without needing a login.

06

Step 5: check again, every week

Answers change as new articles are published and models are updated. Track the same questions over time so you can see whether coverage is working, rather than guessing from one check.

07

What doesn't work

  • Stuffing your site with keywords. Assistants summarise meaning, not keyword counts.
  • Unlabelled paid posts. Reputable sites label sponsored content, and you should want them to.
  • Expecting overnight results. Coverage takes time to be indexed and picked up.
